Help with UmClip.

Setup steps, the permissions macOS will ask for, and fixes for the questions we hear most often.

Getting started

  1. Install. Open the downloaded file and move UmClip to your Applications folder, then launch it.
  2. Grant permissions. On first use macOS asks for Screen Recording, Camera and Microphone access. See the permissions section below.
  3. Pick your sources. Choose a display or window, turn on the webcam and mic, and optionally system audio.
  4. Record and present. Draw on screen, open the whiteboard, switch sources, or use hand controls while the recording runs.
  5. Fix and export. Retake sections, review suggestions, add chapters and captions, then export a file to your Mac.

Permissions

All permissions are managed by macOS in System Settings → Privacy & Security. If you denied a permission earlier, enable it there and relaunch UmClip.

Screen Recording
Needed to capture displays and windows. Without it, screen sources are empty.
Camera
Needed for the webcam bubble and for hand controls.
Microphone
Needed to record your voice.
Accessibility
Needed for global shortcuts and cursor-related effects while recording.

Common topics

Camera not appearing

Check that Camera access is enabled for UmClip in System Settings. If another app is using the camera, close it and try again. External cameras may need to be reselected after reconnecting.

No system audio

Make sure system audio capture is turned on in the recording sources before you start. Some apps and protected media do not expose audio for capture. Check that the Mac’s output device is not muted.

Screen source missing

Screen Recording permission must be granted, and macOS usually requires a relaunch of the app after you change it. Minimized windows and windows on other Spaces may not be listed until they are visible.

Hand controls calibration

Hand tracking runs on your Mac using the webcam. It works best with steady, even lighting, a plain background and your hand fully visible in the frame. Hold a clear point gesture for a moment so the pointer can settle, pinch deliberately to draw, and close your hand into a fist to undo. Recognition is not perfect in every setup; if it struggles, adjust lighting or camera position before changing other settings.

Export location

Exports are saved to the location you choose in the export dialog. Projects and their recordings live in the project folder you selected when the project was created.

Recovered recordings

If UmClip or your Mac quits unexpectedly during a recording, the app looks for the partial recording on next launch and offers to recover it into your project. Recovered material keeps its original and retake structure where possible.
